The photographs above were taken from almost exactly the same viewpoint.  The one on the left, taken in 1959 shows Thornbury railway station still very much as it was when it was opened by Midland Railway on September 2nd 1872.  The second shows what is now Midland Way and in the middle distance the turning on the left to Cooper Road, the last vestiges of Thornbury's railway past.  The reason for the name of Midland Way is clear but the name of Cooper Road may have be less obvious.  Cooper was the name of one of Thornbury's station masters.  Click on the links on the left hand side to read more about the railway in Thornbury.

The railway in Thornbury supplied more than just transport.  It also helped to supply Thornbury with water.  Click here to read more.
